Senator Patterson has now tabled the Prohibition of Human Cloning for Reproduction and the Regulation of Human Embryo Research Amendment Bill 2006 .
To assist you in considering your response to this legislation Do No Harm has prepared two papers, which supplement the more general material on this website. If any material on this site has been helpful in clarifying the issue of cloning - why it is wrong, why it is unnecessary - please feel free to use that in your own submission without any need for acknwledgement.

The second paper provides an analysis of the 8 scientific papers tabled by Senator Patterson and adds to the general argument of this site that cloning is unnecessary. The analysis demonstrates that none of these papers provide a scientific justification for lifting the comprehensive ban on human cloning put in place unanimously by the Parliament in 2002. The papers are at best barely relevant to the question of human cloning, and at worst (form the perspective of Senator Patterson) give strong evidence as to why cloning is unnecessary. Submissions to the Senate Community Affairs Committee considering legislative responses to the Lockhart Review, which are due by the 4th October, can be lodged preferably by email to community.affairs.sen@aph.gov.au Submissions can be brief, focussing on the key ethical concern - that it is wrong to create human embryos solely for research - and the key scientific point - that we can get great benefits of stem cell science without resorting to cloning.
